Sometimes, I reflect on how fortunate I’ve been in life to work in various workplaces. Over the years, I’ve noticed a significant aspect that stands out – how workplaces perceive individuals with autism, especially those with high-functioning autism. Many assume that uttering the word ‘autism’ automatically implies the inability to work or function in a typical work environment. However, that couldn’t be farther from the truth! For me, and many others with high-functioning autism, unlocking potential is all about creating the right environment.

In my earlier years, I often felt that I didn’t quite fit into the workplace. I struggled with certain social interactions, easily got distracted by specific sounds or lights, and believed routines were crucial for me. But that didn’t mean I couldn’t excel in my job; quite the opposite! I was often the one who unlocked new, innovative solutions and could work diligently when I felt comfortable.

I found that working as a carpenter, making stairs and kitchens was a perfect job for me. i could utilize many of my traits as Autistic.
